Recessionista Style - Window Treatments

The Christmas decorations are all cleared away (and they really should be by now). If you're like me, this is the time of year you start obsessing about your interiors.

Who wouldn't want to lounge all day in this dreamy Jamie Drake room? Elegant swags convey classic style while a practical roman shade offers function.

Window treatments make an impactful statement in any room. Done correctly, they can tie the whole room together like the ribbon on a gift box. But you don't have to spend a fortune to get the look. Here are a few recssionista tricks for doing window treatments right.

Always try to hang panels as high on the wall as you can to add height and drama. You don't need the most expensive panels either, but do try to coordinate the style of your fabric to your pole. In other words, don't use a skinny pole with heavy, traditional drapes.

Add embelishments to plain, inexpensive panels. There are so many great retail resources for linen, cotton and silk-look pieces. Adding an interesting patterned ribbon (make it wide enough, please) or bit of trim can make those off the shelf curtains look high-end.

Consider using burlap. It's incredibly cheap, comes in black, white and several shades of tan and hangs beautifully. At Honeysuckle Home we added a quick applique of black over white to create these fab panles for our opening (right).

Have an off-centered or oddly-placed window in a room? Solve it with window treatments! Just because a window falls at a certain place on the wall doesn't mean you have to place panels immediately on either side. Hang full-length panles across a whole wall for drama and interest, or stack panels just one side to disguise assymetry.

This bedroom has a window where the client wanted the bed - and it's off center on the wall. The solution? Create a "headboard" of fabric centered where the bed should go and ignore the window.

Color Trends 2010

Pantone, the world's color authority for 45 years, has announced that THE color for 2010 is.... turquoise. According to the company, "combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing."

Turquoise has both warm and cool undertones so it's universally flattering for both fashion and the home. If you haven't noticed the trend for big, chunky turquoise jewelry then you haven't been paying attention. Accessories are a great way to take advantage of a trend and turquoise pieces will add punch to your existing wardrobe.

In the home, you don't have to make a big commitment and paint the walls. Turquoise is a great accent for greys, black, tans and most neutrals.

This turquoise is always in fashion!

February Artist Sneak Peek

February's featured artist will be Tressa Hommel, a freelance fine artist, and instructor of both Pastels, and Watercolor. Tressa is now doing commissioned work, workshops, private tutoring, and teach Self-enrichment adult education in Drawing, Pastel, and Watercolor. She has studied Pastel painting with Master Pastelist, Albert Handell, Anita West, and Richard McDaniel. Hommel has also studied Watercolor technique with Chris van Winkle(President of National Watercolor Society), and Tom Fong, both internationally known Watercolorists. Originally trained in Oils, Tressa fell in love with Pastels, and the ability to create "Paintings" with a dry medium. The brilliant refraction, and the intensity of color are two of the main attractions.

Honeysuckle Home goes Modern

Join us as we celebrate our featured artist for November, Roya Gharavi. Roya was born in Nottingham, England in 1980 to a Scottish mother and an Iranian father.

By the age of 12 Roya had lived in the UK, New Zealand and the United States. Her passion for art began at a very young age when she would experiment in the glorious world of crayola. The paintbrush was a natural transition.

In 2003 Roya received her BA in Art Studio from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2005 she received her Post Graduate Diploma in Interior Design from the KLC School of Design in Chelsea, London.

For two years after completing college, Roya lived in Rome where she continued to paint and exhibit work as well as develop what was becoming known as her own distinctive approach to painting. For the next 4 years Roya lived in London where she began using oil as a medium. Roya has art on permanent display at the Weissman Gallery, London and the Bridge and Tunnel Gallery, Newcastle.

Roya currently resides in Maryland.

Honeysuckle Quality Consignment is designating Thursday, November 5, as a day to Give Back. 20% of the day’s proceeds will be donated to Giving Back, a 501(c)3 non-profit that sponsors the Help the Homeless Drive in Baltimore, Anne Arundel County and now Washington, DC. Both shops, Honeysuckle and Honeysuckle Home, will extend their hours until 7PM for this special event.

We encourage shoppers to join us in supporting an important resource in our community.

Giving Back, Inc. -- a non-profit that sponsors the Help the Homeless Drive in Baltimore, Anne Arundel County and now Washington, DC -- is dedicated to aiding the homeless on many fronts. With the support of volunteers across the region, Giving Back, Inc. provides food, clothing, fellowship and programs aimed at encouraging self-respect and fostering self-empowerment. The program was founded more than 20 years ago by Linda Greenberg of Annapolis, who remains very involved.

Each Christmas, Help the Homeless volunteers distribute warm clothing, food, supplies, and toys on the streets of Baltimore. In 2006, Help the Homeless added Washington DC to the areas it supports. Efforts this year will be directed towards the collection and delivery of the 'backpack' program. Each backpack will include thermals, a sweatshirt, socks, hat, and a warm pair of gloves. Ideally, it will also include a pair of warm boots and a sleeping bag or blanket.

The change of season always leaves me wanting to change my surroundings too. But the gloomy economy means my decorating budget just isn't what it used to be. You too? Now is the time to take a harder look at some things you already have and make smart decisions about new additions to your interior. Like the song says, "you've got to reduce, re-use, recylce." Here are some tips on how to update your home's interior, Recessionista Style.

Paint

Paint is releatively inexpensive and can make a huge impact on a space. A new coat of paint can even liven up a boring piece of furniture. If you're not feeling brave, pick a warm neutral for the walls and try out one of this year's hot color trends in the form of pillows, throws and accessories.

Fabric
Reupholstery can really update a sofa or chair and can be worth it if you get a great deal on the piece. New window treatments can also enliven your space. There are lots of inexpensive, simple panel-style drapes available now at retail stores.

A pair of new throw pillows is an inexpensive way to add new life to your existing sofa or chairs.

Accessories

We all have a stash of little-used pieces. Take a look at yours and see if you can utilize what you already have in a new way. If you have glass vases or bowls, place a grouping on a table and fill with lemons or limes. A stack of books is a great way to add interest and a little height to your coffee table - just top them off with a cool paperweight or a silver tray or bowl. Trays are great for everyday decorating too - they can organize magazines on your coffee table or just add interest to a side table.

How about those silver candlesticks you got as a weding gift and never use? Put them to work in a grouping on a side , dining or coffee table. Pretty bowls and containers help dress up your Bathroom and can hold everything from soaps to hand towels to cotton balls. Group like objects or colors for bigger impact.

Honeysuckle Home is please to announce the first featured local artist to offer work for sale. Through October, work by Victoria Larson will be available for sale. Victoria paints in both watercolor and oil and focuses on the play of light on water and the landscape.

November's featured artist will be Roya Gharavi. Roya, who's current work features large, mdern acrylics, has trained both in the states and in London. Roya has art on permanent display at the Weissman Gallery, London and the Bridge and Tunnel Gallery, Newcastle.
